A Night at the Draft (pt. 2)
Buffalo Sabres Draft Recap Day 2
Night two of the draft saw the Sabres add 6 more prospects to their already deep pool. It was a quieter night for the Sabres GM who was nursing a hangover after a big day 1 that saw the team make two big trades. The day 1 selections were RW Joakim Kemmel at 11th overall, Liam Ohgren at 20th overall, and Amadeus Lombardi in round 3 at 78th overall. Players drafted in rounds 4 and later are always long shots, but it's interesting to see who was selected anyway, here's how those went:
107th Overall: Cedrick Guindon C 5'10" 170 lbs - Owen Sound Attack (OHL)
2022-23 stats:
Regular Season: 68GP / 22G / 47A / 69P / 14PIM / -14 - Playoffs: 4GP / 1G / 4A / 5P / 0PIM / -2
Guindon is a high IQ player who relies on his ability to find open spaces and has a good release to his shot. He's also committed to the defensive side of the game, getting back on the backcheck and disrupting opponents. He's on the small side so he's got a long path ahead to the NHL, but the skill and IQ is there for him to do it. Owen Sound as a whole didn't look great in the OHL playoffs, but Cedrick was a bright spot.
129th Overall: David Spacek RHD 6'0" 179 lbs - Sherbrooke Phoenix (QMJHL)
2022-23 stats:
Regular Season: 58GP / 13G / 44A / 57P / 30PIM / +53 - Playoffs: 14GP / 3G / 5A / 8P / 8PIM / +3
Spacek was a defender I had highlighted as a priotity reach and I was quite happy he was available with my first of four 5th round selections. He's a two-way defenseman who jumped up my rankings with a PPG performance at the WJC. He also was one point shy of finishing his Q season at a PPG and looked really good in the playoffs as well. He does some of his best work along the wall in one on one battles where he almost always is the one skating away with the puck.
138th Overall: Jorian Donovan LHD 6'2" 183 lbs - Hamilton Bulldogs (OHL)
2022-23 stats:
Regular Season: 55GP / 12G / 33A / 45P / 51PIM / -9 - Playoffs: 6GP / 1G / 3A / 4P / 4PIM / -3
I know comparing players to their fathers who played in the NHL looks lazy, but Jorian looks similar to his father in regards to work ethic and the energy he brings on every shift. I think he has a lower ceiling when compared to my first Dman picked in Spacek, but he just screams NHL defender to me, so he does have a higher floor. He'll be back in the OHL next year where Hamilton is moving to Brantford and looks to continue to improve his offensive game.
139th Overall: Maxim Barbashev LW 6'1" 185 lbs - Moncton Wildcats (QMJHL)
2022-23 stats:
Regular Season: 67GP / 32G / 33A / 65P / 51PIM / +10 - Playoffs: 12GP / 4G / 4A / 8P / 14PIM / -4
Maybe I just drafted Maxim because I drafted his brother Ivan with my first ever draft pick in BRHL. Or maybe his play last season was reason enough for him to move up in our draft. Regardless, Maxim did nothing to make anyone think he can't carve out a career similar to his brother. He plays a physical game which was evident from his first shift in the Q, but the biggest revelation was the uptick in scoring this past season.
146th Overall: Travis Mitchell LHD 6'3" 201 lbs - Cornell University Big Red (NCAA)
2022-23 stats:
34GP / 6G / 13A / 19P / 20PIM / +17
At this point of the night I had drafted everyone I had at ranked at round 4 & up, so I dove into my undrafted list. These guys are indeed long shots, but even getting a decent farm player in round 5 I think is a success. Travis looks to have very limited offensive upside, but he skates well for a bigger guy and plays a solid defensive game.
200th Overall: Jason Polin RW 6'0" 198 lbs - Western Michigan University Broncos (NCAA)
2022-23 stats:
39GP / 30G / 17A / 47P / 13PIM / +26
30 goals in the NCAA no matter what year you're in is an impressive feat, and that's the reason I took a flyer on Polin with my 7th round pick. He didn't show much in a limited role in the AHL after his signing, but should get a look next season as he only signed a one year contract for the 2023-24 season.
That concludes our look at the Sabres draft. See you all for FA!
