2024 MOCK DRAFT (Part 2)
The Rumpy Draft
11. Utah Hockey Club - My boy Joel takes the podium here at the 11 slot. This is where I believe things get really interesting. There are some strong D-men available, But Joel has a couple of good ones already. So, RYAN LEONARD would be the fit here. There are questions surrounding how the Washington Capitals develop prospects, but they also don't have a super deep system. So, look for Leonard to make the jump sooner rather than later. He can be physical sometimes which strikes me as a Joel-type player.
12. Los Angeles Kings - With a couple of stud forwards already in toe, Rumpy doesn't wait around to announce TOM WILLANDER as the lastest addition to the BRHL Kings. He might be the best skater in the draft, matches up against the opponent's most dangerous forwards, and still has skill to burn. Him playing alongside Quinn Hughes in Vancouver for the next decade must have Canucks fans salivating.
13. Detroit Red Wings - After coming off a splendid and exhilarating Stanley Cup victory, what the Wings do next is anyone's guess. Including theirs. I did have a few top 2-way centremen, so I'll stick with what's worked here. I don't think BRAYDEN YAGER slides this far, but if he does, he's a perfect fit for the next generation of BRHL Red Wings. He's a hard-nosed Saskatchewan boy with sim-darling written all over him.
14. Toronto Maple Leafs - Our man Garrett is now up at 14. What the BRHL Leafs could use is a bruising power forward. Joel and his Utah HC let hometown boy, DANIIL BUT slide, and Garrett takes full advantage. Often the bigger prospects take a bit longer to develop, but But... see what I did there... forced his way onto the big club in Russia this year and looked dominant after joining. A nice, tidy add for the Leafs here.
15. Ottawa Senators - Influenced by listening to his brother-in-law gush over QUENTIN MUSTY for the past 2 years, Brayden snags the big, flashy American winger at pick 15. He's a human highlight reel and has all the tools of an NHL star, so our new-and-improved Sens GM can't really go wrong with the selection.
16. Los Angeles Kings - This is where we begin to see why I named this article series, The Rumpy Draft. At 16 Rumpy decides to select the Leafs darling, EASTON COWAN, who proved his consistency with a very lengthy OHL points streak down the stretch last year. He is a pass-first playmaker-type, which isn't always appealing in the sim, but he's a darn good one at it.
17. Los Angeles Kings - After taking a slighty smaller forward in Cowan, Rumpy goes right back to his strategy (I just made it up that this is his strategy) of building a team full of power forwards and D-men, and selects Jets prospect, COLBY BARLOW. He had zero help last season in Owen Sound, but has driven his own line and created all his own chances for 2 seasons now. It's hard to find snipers who are as incredibly good defensively as he is.
18. St. Louis Blues - One of our recent Cup Champs selects here at spot number 18, and I see Eric not wanting to pass on GABRIEL PERREAULT with his pick. In contrast to Barlow, how inflated his numbers were playing with Will Smith is anyone's guess, but he does have some razzle-dazzle in his repertoire. He's fairly small, but still young at least.
19. Vegas Golden Knights - While I might give Sandin-Pellika the edge over OLIVER BONK, I don't see Joe passing on the London Knights phenom at pick 19. Bonk proved he's a beast at both ends of the ice and is trusted in all situations. He's got the bloodline and pedigree to boot. But in his own right he has the potential to be one of 5-6 franchise-type defenders to come out of this draft.
20. Vancouver Canucks - Whether Rob is a real person or a robot, it doesn't really matter, because neither bot nor human would pass on AXEL SANDIN-PELLIKA at this point of the draft. The Red Wings found pure gold again as he dominated in Europe and for sure will be a fan and coach favourite for the Red Wings very soon. Won't likely be this fall as they rightfully drag their feet bringing up prospects, but he'll force their hand sooner rather than later.
