Revisiting Some of the Most Lopsided Trades in BRHL History – 2021 (Part 1):
February 27th, also known as Sumit’s Day
*Note: Unfortunately, I can not track 2022 prospect selections.
There we're way to many trades to breakdown in 2021, so I've decided to split it up into 2 parts; Jan-Jun 2021 - Part 1 & Jul-Dec 2021 - Part 2.
To DET: Nicolas Hague, 2021 OTT 1st (JJ Peterka)
To SEA: Caleb Jones, Kailer Yamamoto, 2021 DET 3rd (Leevi Merilainen)
Analysis: After a stellar 2019-2020 season, Yamamoto has been on a steady decline, while Peterka has been on the steady rise and proven to be a solid middle 6 option in the NHL.
To SJ: Alexander Georgiev, 2021 CBJ 1st (Yegor Chinakov)
To CGY: Kaapo Kahkonen, 2023 SJ 3rd (Elias Pettersson – D)
Analysis: Sumit was able to acquire the better goalie and the higher pick here, although they probably lasted no more than 2 days on his roster.
To SJ: Sidney Crosby (50% retained), Rielly Smith
To OTT: Nick Ritchie, Shane Bowers
Analysis: What the actual fuck Steph. I have no words….
To SJ: 2021 MTL 1st (Thomas Bordeleau)
To: Sami Vatanen, 2022 SJ 6th
Analysis: Sumit was on the side right side of 3 lopsided trades within 30 minutes of each other. Crazy! Vatanen hasn’t played in the NHL since 2021, although Bordeleau hasn’t lived up to the hype, netting a 1st for a guy who lasted one sim season is great work by Sumit.
To BOS: Mikko Koivu, 2021 PHI 2nd (Luke Evangelista)
To LAK: Noel Acciari
Analysis: Boston was able to flip a 4th line forward for an young middle 6 NHLer in Evangelista. Good work here by the Bruins.
To PIT: Matt Duchene, David Rittich, 2021 MTL 1st (Thomas Bordeleau)
To SJ: Vitek Vanecek
Analysis: Sumit’s gonna want this one back. You could argue Rittich is as valuable as Vanecek nowadays, and Toby was able to squeeze a 1st and Duchene out of the deal. This is why Toby is known as the SIM GOAT in some parts of town. What a shark.
To TOR: Sergei Bobrovsky, Josh Anderson, 2022 BOS 6th
To PIT: 2021 WPG 1st (Tyson Foerster)
Analysis: I take back what I said, yikes Toby… Bob is a perennial Vezina finalist, and Josh Anderson has had some serviceable years. Foerster is a decent piece but Toby’s gonna want this one back.
To SJ: J.T. Miller, Tanner Pearson, 2022 BOS 3rd
To BOS: Johnny Gaudreau, Trent Frederic
Analysis: J.T. Miller has turned into one of the best SIM players while Gaudreau has been disappointing to say the least since forcing his way out of Calgary.
To PHI: Tom Wilson, Trevor Moore, 2022 MTL 1st, Cale Fleury, Marc-Edouard Vlasic
To ARI: Adam Boqvist, Ivan Chekhovich
Analysis: Although Boqvist and Chekhovich are still relatively young with upside, the Flyers arguably got the 3 best pieces in the deal in Wilson, Moore and the 1st.
To CHI: Jordan Kyrou, Grigori Denisenko, 2022 MTL 1st
To PHI: Gabriel Landeskog
Analysis: Although impossible to forecast Landeskog’s injury problems, that have kept him off the ice for 2 seasons now, the Flyers would sure be wishing they had Kyrou and the rights to that 1st back.
To SJ: Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Nikita Zadorov
To ARI: David Gustafsson, 2024 1st (Axel Sandin-Pellika), 2022 ARI 3rd, 2022 SJ 7th
Analysis: The Utah Hockey Club is gonna ned ASP to turn into a star, although probable for this deal to turn out. If ASP flops, the HC are gonna want this one back, especially after Nuge’s 22-23 season SIM rates.
To TB: 2022 MIN 1st, 2022 MIN 2nd
To MIN: Mathew Dumba
Analysis: Dumba has been on the steady decline for the last few seasons now, so netting a 1st at his peak was good work by the Lightning here.
