32 Thots - #24 - Vancouver Canucks

The 24th of 32 installments comes as the BRHL chat has been as active as ever. Reports of AI usage and terrible formatting have sparked outrage. Luckily the goal of these articles was to promote activity and we have done just that. Everyone is having a good time. Except Tyler R.

This edition includes the Vancouver Canucks. Tyler Wagner's team is having a solid but unspectacular season; currently sitting 5th in the Pacific Division with a 27-19-11 record. Defensively, they have been one of the better teams in the league, ranking 7th in goals against (2.6 GA per game), showing they can keep games tight.

However, offense has been an issue, as they are only 19th in goals for (3.04 GF per game), and their special teams are underwhelming—the power play (18.18%) and penalty kill (80.42%) both rank 19th, indicating a lack of efficiency in key moments.

Forwards:

  • Key Players: Claude Giroux, Matthew Boldy, Andrei Kuzmenko, Jack Roslovic, Alexander Kerfoot
  • Depth Players: Pius Suter, Colton Sissons, Phillip Danault, Lawson Crouse, Nils Höglander, Jordan Martinook
  • Scratched Players: Tomas Nosek, Kevin Stenlund

Grade: C+

Your forward group has a strong mix of veterans and young talent, but lacks a true elite goal scorer. Claude Giroux provides leadership and offensive playmaking, but he’s aging. Matthew Boldy is your best long-term piece, and he has the potential to become a top-line winger. Andrei Kuzmenko, Jack Roslovic, and Alexander Kerfoot are good middle-six forwards, but none are dominant game-changers.

Your depth is solid, with Phillip Danault and Colton Sissons being great two-way centers, while Lawson Crouse and Nils Höglander add versatility. However, there’s no franchise forward here, which limits your ceiling.

Defense:

  • Key Players: Vince Dunn, Mark Giordano, Mattias Samuelsson
  • Depth Players: Carson Soucy, Olli Määttä, Spencer Stastney, Niko Mikkola
  • Scratched Players: Jordan Oesterle

Grade: B-

Your defensive core is decent but aging. Vince Dunn is your best blueliner, providing strong offensive production, but he isn’t a dominant No. 1 defenseman. Mark Giordano is a veteran leader, but at this stage of his career, he’s more of a depth piece than a top-pairing guy. Mattias Samuelsson is solid defensively, but doesn’t provide much offense.

Your depth is serviceable but uninspiringCarson Soucy, Olli Määttä, and Niko Mikkola are fine bottom-four options, but you lack a true defensive game-breaker.

Goaltending:

  • Goalies: Thatcher Demko, Anthony Stolarz
  • Scratched Goalies: Eric Comrie

Grade: A-

Thatcher Demko is your biggest strength, giving you a true No. 1 goaltender. He’s capable of stealing games and carrying a team in the playoffs. Anthony Stolarz is a serviceable backup who is proving himself as a starter NHL leafs this year, but Eric Comrie isn’t much of a factor.

Prospect Pool:

  • Top Prospects: Trey Augustine, Viktor Persson, Luke Prokop, Emil Pieniniemi
  • Other Notable Prospects: Zac Funk, Jackson Kunz, Cade Webber, Ben Steeves, Aaron Huglen

Grade: C+

Your prospect pool is okay but not amazing. Trey Augustine is your best future asset, as he has starter potential in goal. Viktor Persson and Luke Prokop are decent defensive prospects, but neither project as elite top-pairing guys.

Your forward prospect pool is underwhelming—there are no blue-chip offensive prospects, which is a concern for your long-term outlook.

Draft Capital & Future Outlook:

  • Notable Picks:
    • 2025 1st (VAN), 2026 1st (VAN)
    • Multiple second-round and later-round picks

Grade: C

You own your own first-round picks in 2025 and 2026, which is important for adding future talent. However, you don’t have extra high picks, so your draft flexibility is somewhat limited.

How to Improve:

  1. Acquire an elite forward or top-pairing defenseman to elevate the team.
  2. Use your first-round picks wisely—focus on high-end offensive talent.
  3. Allow Boldy to develop so you can avoid needing a full rebuild.

Final Grade: B

Your team is competitive but not elite. Your goaltending is great, and your forward depth is strong, but you lack a true franchise offensive piece or an elite defenseman.Your team is solid but missing elite pieces to be a true contender. With smart drafting and a few key trades, you could turn into a top-tier team in the near future.
