BRHL Trade Deadline Review
A look at the activity from the trade deadline
Our trade deadline saw 3 trades in the day prior to the deadline and another 12 trades on the day of the deadline. 25 players in total will find themselves in new places and 18 draft picks changes hands. Let’s dive into the deals:
Edmonton Oilers:
It was a quiet deadline for Leon’s Oilers who sat tight with the current roster. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” applies here as Leon was in a good position to sit on the best roster so far in the BRHL as he’s a good 9 points up on second place in the league.
Tampa Bay Lightning:
Eric’s Lightning sit atop the Eastern Conference with 92 points. Two trades at the deadline has him picking up some grit for the pro and farm teams as they make a push for the playoffs.
To San Jose Sharks: TBL 4th 2026 & TBL 6th 2026
To Tampa Bay Lightning: Yakov Trenin
Trenin is an RFA after the season, so this is great value for a non-rental player and should provide some depth for the playoffs and remainder of the season.
To Montreal Canadiens: LAK 7th 2025
To Tampa Bay Lightning: Cal Clutterbuck
Clutterbuck has been a point per game player on the farm and will be an upgrade for Eric’s Crunch farm affiliate.
New York Islanders:
Joe also made no moves at the deadline, trusting his strong team to make noise in the playoffs. Back-up goalie Varlamov is the only UFA at season’s end on the roster so this strong team may stay together for the most part for another kick at the can if all the RFA’s can fit under the salary cap.
Calgary Flames:
Kevin isn’t one to sit around and was active again at the deadline, snagging center Ryan O’Reilly for a playoff run.
To San Jose Sharks: Georgi Merkulov, EDM 2nd 2025, DET 3rd 2026, $4,000,000
To Calgary Flames: Ryan O’Reilly, CHI 5th 2025
The cost wasn’t high for those who had cap space, Merkulov has been flirting with a PPG in the AHL for a while now and might get an extended look in the NHL after the Bruins cleared some veterans out.
Washington Capitals:
Larry had a productive deadline swinging two deals on deadline day.
To Carolina Hurricanes: Alex Steeves
To Washington Capitals: Dino Kambeitz & CAL 5th 2025
Moving on from one of the top scorers on the farm team maybe indicates waving the white flag on playoff hopes, but getting back a player under contract for 3 years along with a pick is a good move.
To Montreal Canadiens: Antonio Stranges, William Carrier, Adam Gajan, WAS 4th 2026
To Washington Capitals: Morgan Geekie
Geekie has set a career high in goals and looks poised to surpass his point total as well playing in an elevated role with the Bruins in the NHL. I’m guessing this move wasn’t to bolster his 4th line this season and is a move looking forward to next season where he’ll see improvement to his ratings.
Chicago Blackhawks:
Dave has 7 players who will be free agents at season’s end but decided to sit tight since he’s firmly in a playoff spot. No sense blowing it up when a cup is within your sights.
Nashville Predators:
Sheds proclaimed he was in the market for a better back-up goalie and some help down the middle of the ice and he accomplished just that.
To Montreal Canadiens: Alex Lyon
To Nashville Predators: Laurent Brossoit
Brossoit has already shown he’s a better goalie than Lyon in his first action in Nashville, only letting in 1 goal on 31 shots.
To Nashville Predators: Jeff Carter
To Los Angeles Kings: $2,350,000
To Las Vegas Knights: NSH 5th 2025
To Nashville Predators: Nico Strum
Carter has been productive so far in his farewell tour and Strum provides some defensive depth at the center position. And the cost to acquire these pieces was relatively cheap.
Colorado Avalanche:
Pat managed to upgrade his back end with a more defensively reliable defender.
To Colorado Avalanche: Joshua Brown
To Montreal Canadiens: Bret Kulak
Kulak had one more season under contract while Brown will be a UFA at season’s end, but this is an upgrade for this year as Brown has better ratings pretty much across the board.
New York Rangers:
PJ’s in a decent spot with the Rangers and sat tight at the deadline, making no moves. The roster is a good mix of young and old and should be in the playoffs barring a total collapse.
New Jersey Devils:
Ken got his shopping done early, making one trade the day before the deadline.
To New Jersey Devils: Jan Rutta
To Los Angeles Kings: NJD 5th & 6th 2025
Rutta’s 92 DF rating was the key factor here for this pick-up. But I do wonder what those ratings will look like next season after he’s looked slightly worse this season with the terrible Sharks team and making 5.3 mil.
Seattle Kraken:
Rex added at the deadline, pulling off one trade with Steve’s Canadiens.
To Seattle Kraken: Jake Evans & $750,000
To Montreal Canadiens: ANA 3rd 2025 & SEA 4th 2026
Evans should be a considerable upgrade at 3C for Rex’s Kraken and he’s already matched his career high in points this year in the NHL so next season he’ll be even better.
Buffalo Sabres:
Another team happy with the current state of things, Jared’s Sabres made no moves on or leading up to the deadline. With how tight everything is in the Atlantic time will tell if that was a good call or not.
Utah Hockey Club:
Joel added at the deadline, bringing in a rental player for a playoff push.
To San Jose Sharks: Jacob Benard-Docker & Sonny Milano
To Utah HC: Jeff Skinner
Skinner has decent ratings this season and as a rental he won’t be a boat anchor next season. Solid pick-up.
Dallas Stars:
Junya is currently sitting in a wildcard spot in the Western Conference and sat tight at the deadline, having made his big move earlier this year.
Florida Panthers:
Tyler has a solid mix of youth and veteran players and also decided to sit pat at the deadline using his own UFA’s as rental players.
Boston Bruins:
Greg was pretty active leading up to the deadline, getting his shopping done early.
Detroit Red Wings:
Dan also sat pat at the deadline, making his big splash ahead of time bringing in Hyman.
Vancouver Canucks:
Tyler made the most of his cap space bolstering his center position and bringing in a depth defender.
To Vancouver Canucks: Calvin De Hann & Nazem Kadri
To Ottawa Senators: VAN 2nd 2025 & NYR 2nd 2025
Two mid second round picks was enough to bring in a top center and depth defender who are not rental players. Pretty good value. This should help his push for the playoffs as the Canucks are only 3 points out of a wild card spot.
Philadelphia Flyers:
Another team who made no moves at the deadline. Anthony has most of his players locked up past this season with only Luke Glendening as a UFA. He’s still in the hunt for the playoffs.
Montreal Canadiens:
Steve was one of the more active GMs at the deadline wanting to give his rebuild a good kick in the nuts.
To Colorado Avalanche: Joshua Brown
To Montreal Canadiens: Bret Kulak
To Montreal Canadiens: Antonio Stranges, William Carrier, Adam Gajan, WAS 4th 2026
To Washington Capitals: Morgan Geekie
To Montreal Canadiens: Alex Lyon
To Nashville Predators: Laurent Brossoit
To Montreal Canadiens: LAK 7th 2025
To Tampa Bay Lightning: Cal Clutterbuck
To Seattle Kraken: Jake Evans & $750,000
To Montreal Canadiens: ANA 3rd 2025 & SEA 4th 2026
Out is Jake Evans, Cal Clutterbuck, Laurent Brossoit, Morgan Geekie, Joshua Brown and $750,000. In is Alex Lyon, Bret Kulak, Antonio Stranges, William Carrier, Adam Gajan, 2025 3rd & 7th round picks, and two 2026 4th round picks. The roster is quite stripped down now as Steve looks to get himself into a good lottery spot.
Los Angeles Kings:
Tyler was busy at the deadline both as a seller and a buyer.
To Columbus Blue Jackets: UTH 3rd 2025
To Los Angeles Kings: Nikita Zadorov
Rumpy gets his real life Bruin for a 3rd round pick. Zadorov is under contract for 5 years.
To New Jersey Devils: Jan Rutta
To Los Angeles Kings: NJD 5th & 6th 2025
To make room for Zadorov, Rutta was moved out for some late picks.
To Nashville Predators: Jeff Carter
To Los Angeles Kings: $2,350,000
And lastly, moving out a player set to retire at seasons end for some much needed cash.
Ottawa Senators:
Brayden has been busy all season shopping his players while in the midst of a rebuild and managed to make one deal at the deadline.
To Vancouver Canucks: Calvin De Hann & Nazem Kadri
To Ottawa Senators: VAN 2nd 2025 & NYR 2nd 2025
The two second round picks are pretty good, Kadri was signed with the intention of selling at the deadline. That gives you some pretty good draft capital to be a mover and shaker at the draft.
St. Louis Blues:
Eric being in the bottom of the leagues standings decided to be a buyer at the deadline making one deal with Sumit.
To St. Louis Blues: Darcy Kuemper
To San Jose Sharks: STL 1st 2025 & STL 4th 2025
Okay, saying this was a buyers move is a bit misleading, Kuemper has terrible stats this season but will be rated fairly well next season. This move is all about bouncing back next year and getting ahead of the ridiculous goalie market in FA.
Minnesota Wild:
Al’s Wild…wait, Devon’s Wild team…oh wait…Toby’s Wild team? I think Toby was running the show in Minnesota prior to the deadline pulling off a few moves early. With the work already done there were no moves on deadline day.
Columbus Blue Jackets:
Jesse has been acquiring draft picks, loading up in 2025 with 15 picks.
To Columbus Blue Jackets: UTH 3rd 2025
To Los Angeles Kings: Nikita Zadorov
Jesse knows his market, selling a Bruins player to a Bruins fan for a 3rd.
Pittsburgh Penguins:
Toby’s Penguins…oh wait, who’s running the show here now? Anyway, the Pens were quiet at the deadline, moving out what they could early.
Las Vegas Knights:
Joe continues to sell off what he can to move the rebuild along.
To Las Vegas Knights: NSH 5th 2025
To Nashville Predators: Nico Strum
One deal was struck with Nashville bringing in another mid round draft selection to stock the cupboards.
Winnipeg Jets:
Doc sat tight at the deadline. Most of the moves he could make look better suited as off-season moves like possibly moving on from Eichel.
Carolina Hurricanes:
It’s odd seeing Rich this far down the standings. He hasn’t committed to tearing it right down for a rebuild and might possibly be looking at a quick re-tool instead.
To Carolina Hurricanes: Alex Steeves
To Washington Capitals: Dino Kambeitz & CAL 5th 2025
Rich gets real life Leafs player Steeves for a farm player & a 5th. Steeves will need to stay on the pro team next season or he’ll be exposed to the waiver draft. Maybe it’ll be more tanking next season as well.
San Jose Sharks:
Sumit was quite active at the deadline and leading up to it
To San Jose Sharks: Georgi Merkulov, EDM 2nd 2025, DET 3rd 2026, $4,000,000
To Calgary Flames: Ryan O’Reilly, CHI 5th 2025
To San Jose Sharks: Jacob Benard-Docker & Sonny Milano
To Utah HC: Jeff Skinner
To St. Louis Blues: Darcy Kuemper
To San Jose Sharks: STL 1st 2025 & STL 4th 2025
To San Jose Sharks: TBL 4th 2026 & TBL 6th 2026
To Tampa Bay Lightning: Yakov Trenin
Sumit has added a lot of draft picks, the best being the STL 1st this year which is on the cusp of being a lotto pick. The young players coming in aren’t world beaters but might be useful down the road.
Toronto Maple Leafs:
Garrett didn’t make any deadline moves. It’s odd seeing someone who is blatantly tanking not move out the UFA players in Namestnikov and Hall. Was it the high Hansford prices or just a lack of working the chat for buyers?
Anaheim Ducks:
Another tanking team opting to keep their UFA’s to seasons end. There was talk of some GM’s switching teams, so maybe that was at play here.
