32 Thots - #6 - New York Islanders

The 6th installment of the epic three day weekend event of thirty two thots includes Mr. Bubanjes' New York Islanders.

The Islanders are currently 48-23-7, likely securing 1st place in the Metropolitan Division.

  • Powerplay (PP): 23.58% (6th) — a very strong unit.
  • Penalty Kill (PK): 83.22% (7th) — among the better teams at shutting opponents down.
  • Goals For (GF): 3.22 (15th) — solid offensive production.
  • Goals Against (GA): 2.79 (13th) — defense and goaltending holding steady.

Overall, this is a balanced and competitive roster that's dangerous in both special teams and even strength.

Forwards: B+

This forward group is impressive and deep:

·         Top-end talent:

    • Aleksander Barkov (elite two-way center)
    • Kyle Connor (consistent goal scorer)
    • Matthew Tkachuk (power forward, top fantasy piece)
    • Travis Konecny, Will Cuylle, Michael Bunting are strong complimentary pieces.

·         Good veteran support:

    • Jason Dickinson, Eeli Tolvanen, Jonatan Berggren provide nice depth.
    • Otto Koivula and others add serviceable bottom-six options.

You have a legit top line, solid second line, and enough middle-six forwards to grind opponents down. Your mix of skill, grit, and versatility is impressive.

Weakness:

  • Some depth players (like Mitchell Stephens) aren't much fantasy relevant.

Defense: A-

This is a serious strength:

  • Charlie McAvoy (elite #1 defenseman)
  • Ryan Pulock, Brandon Carlo, Scott Mayfield bring heavy defensive minutes.
  • Alex Vlasic and Noah Juulsen add extra stability.

This D-core has everything — offense, shutdown ability, and depth.

Weakness:

  • Could use one more offensive-minded D beyond McAvoy.

Goalies: A

  • Andrei Vasilevskiy — one of the best goalies in the world when healthy.
  • Semyon Varlamov — excellent backup and spot starter.

You have top-end stability here. Vasilevskiy alone is a playoff-winning piece.

Prospect Pool: B-

Not elite but solid enough to keep feeding talent in:

  • Eduard Sale and Isaac Howard headline your forwards with good upside.
  • Ryan Chesley and Mats Lindgren have potential on D.
  • Maxim Strbak and Simon Forsmark are longer-term defense projects.

Most others (like Dmitri Kostenko, Jake Karabela, Ethan Phillips) project more as depth or may not pan out.

Summary:

  • You have a couple good forward prospects, some D prospects, but no blue-chip future superstars unless someone takes a big jump.
  • Depth is decent though.

Draft Picks: B

You hold multiple 2025 and 2026 picks, including:

  • 2025: BUF 1st (valuable), NYI 3rd, NYI 5th, NYI 6th, NYI 7th, CLB 4th
  • 2026: NYI 1st, NYI 2nd, SJS 2nd, NYI 3rd, NYI 4th, DET 4th, NYI 6th, NYI 7th

Final Grade: B+++

Strengths:

  • Top-end forwards (Barkov, Connor, Tkachuk)
  • Very strong defense core led by McAvoy.
  • Elite goaltending tandem (Vasilevskiy, Varlamov).
  • Healthy number of draft picks.

Weaknesses:

  • Prospect pool lacks guaranteed future stars.
  • Forward depth past top 9 gets thinner.

Overall:
You're built to win now and for the next few seasons, with solid assets to stay competitive in the future. This team could easily contend for a title if health and form hold.

Here are 3 suggestions to make your team even stronger.

1. Add One More Top-Six Forward (Preferably a Center or Dynamic Winger)

  • Your top guys like Barkov, Connor, and Tkachuk are elite, but your second line could use another consistent 50-60 point scorer.
  • Targets: Look for a young forward who is either breaking out or undervalued — someone like Trevor Zegras, Nick Suzuki, Dylan Cozens, etc.
  • Reason: It gives you insurance if someone underperforms or gets injured and makes you harder to shut down in the playoffs.

2. Upgrade Your Prospect Pool (Package Picks + Mid-Tier Prospects)

  • Your current prospects are decent but you lack a future game-breaker.
  • Suggestion: Package your 2nd/3rd round picks and maybe one or two "B" prospects (like Andrew Strathmann, Ryan Greene) to move up in the draft or acquire a high-end 18-19 year old prospect.
  • Reason: You want to have at least one future top-six player or #2 defenseman in the pipeline within 2-3 years.

3. Explore a Depth Defense Upgrade

  • McAvoy is a beast and your defense is strong overall, but adding another mobile, offensive-minded D would round it out even more.
  • Targets: Someone like Thomas Harley, Sean Durzi, or even a cheap veteran who gets powerplay minutes.
  • Reason: In the playoffs or late-season injuries, having another puck mover boosts your attack without weakening your defensive core.
