Breaking Down Recent Trades
Summaries of recent deals
Good Day Gentlemen,
I'm back again to review some of the recent deals that went down in the BRHL. Although Greg has a podcast coming that'll likely cover them, it's always fun to read other people's takes. So here we are.
To Hurricanes:
Cam Atkinson
Conor Sheary
Manuel Wiederer
To Senators:
Tyler Johnson
Tanner Pearson
Kyle Quincey
Summary: The Canes get the best player in this deal, this year and moving forward. The Kings are a disaster right now, so Sheary will likely be an upgrade on Pearson next year. Atkinson will remain better than Johnson. Quincey and Wiederer are fillers. I'm calling this a win for the Hurricanes, though after everything is factored in, it's a pretty even swap.
To Flyers:
Brenadan Gallagher
John Klingberg
David Noel
Noah Gregor
2021 OTT 1st
3,000,000
To Senators:
Claude Giroux (5 mil retained next 3 years)
Clayton Stoner
WOW. Anthony sent me a message on ICQ the night (or night before) this deal went down, and I was playing Fortnite at the time. He pulled a classic Anthony, spelling 'Klingberg' as 'Klinsburg'. So I thought it was a couple fillers with Gallagher and a 1st. Even though I didn't notice Klingberg in the deal, I still thought it'd be worth considering given Anthony's situation. I told him "This might be the best you get offered. I'd consider it." He came back to me a few minutes later and I saw that Klingberg was in the deal. I couldn't type "DO THAT NOW" fast enough. I don't like that Anthony has already retained the max over the next three years. I would hate being strapped down like that. But this is a franchise altering deal for him. Steph is clearly all in this year, but does this trade even make him better? I guess that remains to be seen. As for this trade, it is as clear of a win for Anthony as I've ever seen in the BRHL.
To Flyers:
Keith 'Kincaid' Kinkaid
2019 LVG 3rd
2019 NSH 5th
2020 LVG 7th
To Golden Knights:
Carter Hutton (max retained for 3 years)
This is a brutal deal for Anthony. If he was only retaining this year, it's probably an even trade. I have no idea how Joe convinced him to retain 4.5 for three years, while only giving a 3rd as the best pick. If Anthony were to sign a UFA to a one year deal next FA period, he could retain 4.5 and get a 2nd easily. He put himself in a bad spot with these goalie contracts, and this trade shows it.
To Avalanche:
Ryan Suter (50% retained this year, 4.25 retained next year)
To Canucks:
2019 NYI 4th
2021 COL 2nd
2021 COL 4th
9,000,000
This is not the end of the world for the Canucks, but Rob could've done better than Colorado's 2021 2nd as the key piece when retaining this much $ for two years. Credit to Bryce for lining this deal up. Smilar to the write-ups on Anthony's deals, I think Rob should've given Suter a one year deal and retained for the same return. Again, not the end of the world for the Canucks, but a win for Bryce here. The rich get richer.
To Predators:
Kari Lehtonen
2020 NSH 5th
To Flyers:
Jimmy Howard
2019 STL 3rd
This is a pretty even swap. It's good for Anthony to get out from Lehtonen's contract, while upgrading a pick in the process. As for Nashville, it's an upgrade in net for a team that refuses to quit. Good deal for both sides here. Side note: Nashville made a separate deal to get Lehtonen retained.
To Predators:
Mike Hoffman
To Blackhawks:
David Perron
I don't hate this trade for either. I like Hoffman better as a player; he's locked in for two extra years at 6.5 mil, which I'm not sure that I love. Perron has a much better PA rating, while Hoffman is a better scorer. Tough one to call here. Can't call it a loss for either side yet, though.
To Stoners:
2019 DET 1st
2019 DET 3rd
Julien Nantel
Tanner MacMaster
1,000,000
To Red Wings:
P.K. Subban (max retained both years)
Again. Sign these guys to one year deals, and you'll likely get the same return. I can't say I dislike this for Rex, though. He got a 1st and a 3rd for two years retention. Come to think of it, maybe he wouldn't have got the same return if this was a one year deal for Subban. Either way, good move for Rex, and I don't dislike it for Nolan's side either. A great addition to a great team in Detroit.
To Stoners:
2019 NJD 1st
To Kings:
Jeff Carter (max retained this year, 4.35 next year)
I don't dislike this for Rumpy, but love it for Rex, getting another 1st rounder. You guys know what I think of signing and trading UFAs by now. Good trade for both.
To Panthers:
Kevin Miller
Tomas Hyka
2019 NYI 3rd
To Flames:
Brent Seabrook
Seabrook isn't rated the greatest, but he's a decent 2nd/3rd pairing guy. This is a good trade for both. I do like the Panthers getting younger and adding a pick.
To Blackhawks:
Austin Watson
To Panthers:
2019 PHI 4th
2019 MON 7th
LATE ADDITION THAT I MISSED:
To Flyers:
2019 COL 1st
2020 NSH 1st
2020 NSH 4th
2020 NSH 5th
Another good deal for both. Panthers adding picks, while Hawks improve their 4th line at a low cost.
To Predators:
John 'Klinsburg' Klingberg
2020 PHI 6th
2020 PHI 7th
Preds paid a high price for an elite defenseman. With that said, Anthony could have maybe done better than two late 1sts. You can't really argue against either side in this deal, though. Anthony stole Klingberg and turned him into 2 1sts + and Nashville got an elite D for a couple late 1sts. Great trade for both, though I would have liked to see Anthony get NSH 1st this year, rather than Colorado's.
That does it for this article. Thanks for reading!
