A Walk Down Memory Lane

Best & Worst Picks from Each Entry Draft

It's that magical time of year, when tank jobs bear fruit, and Toby gives me a first round pick. Let's take a look back at the history of the BRHL draft and see what lies beneath. Obviously as we hit 2015 and more recent, there's a harder time determining best/worst, and it's even more subjective.

2007
Best Pick - Brad Marchand (47 - Ross S)
Worst Pick - James Sheppard (10 - Garrett)
Funnest Pick/Story - Rod Edwards drafting Jesse Joensuu and declaring he would be the best player from the entire draft

2008
Best Pick - PK Subban (38 - Jordan, yes I know, shocking to see him on a best of list) Eric gets honorable mention for Jamie Bennn at 68
Worst Pick - Zach Hamill (7), Brett MacLean (9), Akim Aliu (30) - All 1st round picks by Rod E - keep in mind, this was with a year hindsight where all of them looked bad already. No wonder the Pens franchise has been awful forever, thankfully Toby will keep that alive!
Funnest Pick/Story - Bryce having picks 1 & 2. Trading 2 for Getzlaf so he could be funny and take Gagner 1st. Whoops

2009
Best Pick - Roman Josi (59 - Ross S)
Worst Pick - Nikita Filatov (5 - Rob I)
Funnest Pick/Story - Immediately after taking Tim Stapleton at 39, Rod E declares he will put 70+ points up next year in the NHL. Keep in mind this was after getting 4 NHL games in, as a 26 year old. He proceeded to put up 2. Also, Luke shares his email he sent to Darryl Sutter begging the Flames to draft Jordan Eberle, then acting like he was the only one who'd ever had the thought he'd be a good pick, pretty sure the Flamers traded back that year at the draft.

2010
Best Pick - Sergei Bobrovsky (178 - Bryce)
Worst Pick - Scott Glennie (15 - Bryce)
Funnest Pick/Story - Kirk and Derek T forfeiting 4th round picks for trying to arrange for a rental deal for Anti Niemi (I'll trade you him for X now, you send him back for X after the season)

2011
Best Pick - Evgeni Kuznetsov (15 - Kevin)
Worst Pick - Dylan McIlrath (12 - John D)
Funnest Pick/Story - Rex taking Quinton Howden at 25, and declaring him to be the next Jonathan Toews. Or me talking up Maxim Kitsyn so much to Kirk predraft that he should be a first rounder, that Kirk took him at 44. When I had him like 100 or so. I can't remember why Kirk was fined a 7th round pick this year. And then he had another voided because he took someone already drafted and we didn't catch it for while after.

2012
Best Pick - Nikita Kucherov (65 - Kevin)
Worst Pick - Mark McNeill (14 - Kirk)
Funnest Pick/Story -Round 3 (Kucherov, Edmundson, Lowry, Trochek,
Gaudreau, F. Anderson, Reider) was loaded

2013
Best Pick - Kevin's first 3 rounds, check it out Trouba (3), Faksa (19), Vasilevski (24), Jankowski (32), Seiloff (36), Skjei (48), Nieves (58), Gostisbehere (62), Tierney (72), Blueger (90)
Worst Pick - Griffin Reinhart (13 - Jordan)
Funnest Pick/Story - Bryce taking Zaitsev at 209, a full 3 years before he would ever sign an NHL deal. Brag him up for 3 years, then watch Nolan take over his team and deal him to Rumpy for Kessel.

2014
Best Pick - Jacob Slavin (94 - Bryce)
Worst Pick - Combo of Lazar (17), Rychel (19), Klimchuk (27) for Rich E. That's a rough first round.
Funnest Pick/Story - Rumpy trading with Billy to take Joel Rumpel in r5 (why not r7, no-one knew). He did have a pretty good year in Scotland this year though.

2015
Best Pick - Brayden Point (37 - Jesse).
Worst Pick - Michael Dal Colle (2 - Devon)
Funnest Pick/Story - So much talent on the board, and Devon takes Dal Colle at 2. He's now spent 4 years defending this pick.Too early to really label any high pick a complete bust, even Dal Colle could be a potential 3rd line guy.

2016
Best Pick - Sebastian Aho (15 - Bryce) *F it, it's my list* he was my 4th ranked guy.
Worst Pick - Yevgeni Svechnikov (21 - Tim S) *not looking promising*
Funnest Pick/Story - Kirk taking Ryan Pilon at 114. The room going deathly quiet until the next pick is made, and then just tearing into Kirk. Was an all-time moment as Pilon had retired about a year earlier. Kirk then made up a story how he'd heard he was coming back. Was terrific.

2017
Best Pick - Carter Hart (27 - Steve) - Honorable mention Jesper Bratt (154 - Jesse)
Worst Pick - Puljujarvi (3 - Anthony) and Michael McLeod (12 - Jared) are not looking pretty a few years later.
Funnest Pick/Story - Dan promising Devon he would tank as part of a deal to move up and get MacAvoy ahead of Rumpy. Just, so Devon.

2018
Best Pick - A year out, it looks like it could be Cale Makar (15 - Leon), who dropped simply because Bryce continued to shred him. I wish I could say it was mind games, it wasn't. I hope I am proven wrong for the next 15 years.
Worst Pick - Casey Mittelstadt (3 - Steve), and Eeli Tolvanen (5 - Larry) are carrying some significant risk. Gabriel Vilardi (8 - Jared) has serious health issues, and so does our winner, Conor Timmins (9 - Anaheim), see below.
Funnest Pick/Story - Devon "figuring out" how Bryce & Kevin draft, then proceeding to take Connor Timmins at 9.
He may very well have a long career and be a top pair dman, but he was horribly overdrafted, and didn't play a game last year due to concussions. It was a dumb pick where he was picked, and doesn't look any better today.

That is all, this weekend we will add another chapter as the absolute best part about the league is upon us. So many questions. Will Mika take a non-Finn at #1? Will Toby keep the history of awful Cordell decisions near the top of the draft alive? Will Rex show up? Will Jordan continue taking the 1st round picks who drop? Will Kevin continue to stockpile picks, and have strong classes? Will Jesse continue his recent run of great drafts?
