With the offseason just about wrapped up, the landscape of the league is becoming clearer.  There are 5 tiers of teams, championship contenders, dark horses, 1 and dones, just a bit outside, and the rest.  Let’s take a look at where everyone sits...

CHAMPIONSHIP CONTENDERS

These teams have a legitimate shot to take the cup.  They all have high level talent through multiple lines and defense is strong.  Goalie is also strong...

Dallas Stars 

Vegas Golden Knights 

Colorado Avalanche

Boston Bruins

Ottawa Senators

Columbus Blue Jackets

New York Islanders

Dark Horses

These teams will always somehow be in it.  They have some high level talent, but not as deep as the contenders.  Have glaring holes, but might be lucky enough to win a cup.

Nashville Predators

Tampa Bay Lightning

New York Rangers

Montreal Canadiens

1 and Dones

These teams will have a good enough team to make the playoffs, but will not go deep.  They have zero chance to win it all.  I applaud their attempt to win, but should probably tank and try to get higher picks.

Calgary Flames

Anaheim Ducks

Los Angeles Kings

Winnipeg Jets

Detroit Red Wings

Just A Bit Outside

These teams will only sniff the playoffs, while trying to do anything they can to make it in.  I fully expect these guys to make a push till the last day.

Carolina Hurricanes

These guys won’t come close to the playoffs and SHOULD be tanking, but we all know that won’t be happening as long as Simpleton is in the league.  I’m sure you can figure out who’s in this category...Deric
