Playoff Daily Recap

Goalies once again key

Bruins   5

Isles     3

The Isles had such an easy time in game 1 that they clearly expected to just show up to win but that was not at all the case on this evening. Although the Bruins didn't come out like gang-busters they at least showed up in the first which is more then can be said for A.Vasilevskiy who was anything but his all-world self allowing 3 goals on just 9 shots and trailed 3-1 heading to the second. I am not sure what was said between periods in either room but whatever was said in the Bruins room better not be ever said again as they were completely blanked in the second and if not for the strong play of "the King" this game would have slipped away. The B's were outshot 14-0 in the second but only surrendered 1 goal to maintain a 1 goal lead into the third and were then opportunistic on a couple of PP chances sealing this game. This was a game that was in control for most of the game by NY but timely shooting and strong goaltending is the reason Boston slips out of town tied at 1.

Pens   1

CBJ    4

This is about the most realistic sim I have seen in recent memory. GM Jesse can do nothing but smile at this result as his team won all three periods statiscally, despite the 1-1 second period score, and the goaltending battle. CBJ outshot the Pens 37-22 and the score reflected the game play....it wasn't close....and unless GM Toby can find a way to break down Markstrom at home this will end quickly! CBJ up 2-0

Canes   0

Habs    2

Much like the Pens game above this game wasn't close. The Habs played like a team trying to put a quick end to this first round and the Canes played "not to lose" but that is exactly what they did. Carolina was hanging around in this one despite not really doing a whole lot but penalties became a problem as the game wore on with Montreal getting 7 opportunities on the PP and when they finally cashed in on one that was all J. Binnington would need as he has now only surrendered 1 goal against in 2 games. E. Gudbranson took any chance the Canes had at a comback away when he took a foolish penalty late leading to the second PP goal of the game for M. Domi. GM Rich is still shaking his head at why the third pairing defenseman was even near the ice in the final minute and speculation is someone on the coaching staff is in line for dismissal! Canes limp home in trouble down 2.

Bolts  1

Sens  4

This series is another where it just looks like one team has too much firepower for the goaltending to handle while the other team tenders just aren't giving up much and could come to a quick end. Tampa/ Sens was expected to be close and may still become that way but like the 2 series above has the potential to just be a broom job! The Sens came out of the gate at home the way every GM hopes their team would putting on early pressure and were rewarded with a 2-0 lead at the end of the first and that was it...that was all they would need as D. Kuemper although not flawless was close enough to pick up his second win. Tampa looks to find answers at home down 0-2
