Observation of Early Rounds - Good, Bad, Crazy
Summary of early rounds
Good: Calgary's Haul
Obviously Kevin was going to bring in a handful of studs, but it still should be brought up. Starting with the move up to grab Dach at 4, he then followed it by grabbing the slipping Cozens at 11. I won't list his entire crop, but York at 33 and Kolyachonok at 65 were other picks of his I liked a lot.
Good: Rob Landing His Canuck
It was nice to see Rob finally land his 1st round Canuck. Passing on Pettersson hurt, and missing out on Hughes had to sting as well. While I didn't like giving up Dach in his position, fetching Podkolzin and pick 17 in a larger deal shouldn't hurt the rebuild too much.
Crazy: Larkin for Byram
Wow, talk about a fun draft day trade. Good on Joe (Vegas) and Garrett (Toronto) for adding something else massive to be discussed. I know Joe thinks Byram will be a star, and Larkin is a star - this could be a trade that works out really well for both sides. Obviously this is a big risk on Vegas side; it'll be interesting to see how it unfolds in the coming years.
Interesting: Dave (Blackhawks) Draft
Let me start by saying that I have no issue with any of the players Dave selected in the first round. I really like all 3 players. With that said, he took 3 PURELY offensive forwards. Robertson was likely overdrafted a bit (believe me I know all about overdrafting players), but I understand getting the guys you want. I REALLY liked Dave's 2nd round, where he added another 2 PURELY offensive forwards. Obviously, roles can change, players can change, etc. As of now, it looks like he added 5 players that will forever have a DF rating under 60, so it'll be interesting to see how that plays out over time. What I do know is that it was surprising and fun to see Dave draft so many players and he was clearly prepared coming in.
Good: Bryce's 1st Round
I hate to further toot his horn, but Bryce pretty well had his way with the draft last night. Newhook at 10 made a lot of sense, and he then moved into the 1st round again to grab Broberg at 23. I have no idea how Broberg was there, but good on Bryce for landing him. He seems to always find a way.
Good: Jared's Draft
I don't think anyone could argue against the value of Jared's picks. I really liked Hoglander at 25. I'm not Turcotte's biggest fan, but getting him at 7 certainly wasn't bad. Picking up Thomson and Beecher who both slid about 10 picks had to leave Jared happy, as well. I also like the Hunter Jones pick, as goaltending depth is super important and I like Jones chances of making it one day.
Good: Penguins Following Through
I would have taken Kakko at # 1, but I'm happy that Toby stuck to his own plan. Unfortunately he lost Hoglander the pick before his, but he wisely traded back and still landed his plan B. I do really like Sogaard as a prospect and I liked the pick.
Bad: Knight at 6
I don't even know if this is bad, but I think Knight was mildly overdrafted. I think he would have been there at 9. With that said, I like Seider (who he picked at 9) and definitely can't fault Anthony for adding a high end goalie prospect to his system.
Bad: Devils Draft
I feel like Tim overdrafted each of his 1st rounders. I don't think he drafted much upside, and I think each player he drafted in the 1st round carries a lot of risk, minus maybe Harley. I don't HATE any of his selections as players, just feel like he could have done better. Schwindt I don't feel has much upside, didn't like that pick at 43. Maybe he carves out a nice 2 way NHL role and that changes. I like Tim, I think his rebuild will come along, and this crop of players should help with that. I just personally didn't love his selections. Maybe that's a good thing for New Jersey.
Unmentioned Picks I Really Liked:
Soderstrom - 12 - Blues
Rees - 42 - Canadiens
Kotchekov - 74 - Canadiens
Puistola & Holmstrom - 54 & 55 - Lightning
Korczak - 57 - Jets
Knyazev - 89 - Jets
Maccelli - 46 - Flyers
Voronkov - 75 - Avalanche
Please don't be offended if you think you made a good pick that was unmentioned or are listed in my bad books. This is simply an opinion based article and no one really knows how everything will play out over time. I might have missed some things. I don't know. Hopefully you enjoyed the read.
