Jets need cash! 2022 draft review
Early look at the 2022 draft!
2022 BRHL Draft Preview
With the 2022 draft being critical to the rebuilds of many clubs, including mine, I decided to review the movers and shakers of the 2021 NHL draft to see who is moving up draft boards and who will crash! Interesting Knights with busy day coming with 5(!!) first rounders…and of course Kevin with 3 and shock Steph with 3 too!
Predicted draft position based on standings and win percentage as of 06-03-22 Aus time!
1. Lightning - Owen Power – guy has been elite at NCAA level, played amazing at WC, WJC had a hat trick in first game and played at Olympics. Oh and is a monster physically who can skate. Be surprised if not the pick.
2. Sabres – Matt Beniers – Elite hands and vision was set to star at WJC. Fitted in well with US Olympic team and lighting lamp with UM in NCAA. Likely one and done as expect him in Seattle of the NHL next season.
3. Jets – Mason McTavish – Might go two, but looked great in 9 game NHL introduction earlier in year with 3 points. Traded to the Hammer in the OHL, has been playing very well. Also played at Olympics.
4. Coyotes – Now it gets tougher as 4-7 could go any numbers of ways. Going to take Luke Hughes here. Bigger than brothers but same skill with 33 pts in NCAA including 17 goals as a freshman dman. That injury is healed that saw some question drafting at 4 overall. He will go top 5.
5. Penguins – William Eklund. Looked good in 9 game stint with SJ. Was surprised they did not keep them. In two games at WJC, 3 points showed ready to dominate with best. At Djurgardens of SHL has 13 pts in 23 games as a teenager, but only one goal. Might drop to 6-7 depending on teams interest.
6. Redwings – Kent Johnson – super slick hands could go 4-6. Had a pt per game at Olympics. 31 pts in 26 NCAA games. This kid is going to be a high end skill player.
7. Canucks – Brandt Clarke- I like this kid and could see going higher but a lot of quality in this draft. Skates like wind and reminds me of Drysdale who looks alright in NHL as teen.
8. Senators – Cole Sillinger – NHL player this year with 52 games played with 18 pts, including 8 goals. He will play a good two way game. Not super skilled, but works and solid defense will come. Quality pick at 8.
9. Rangers – Dylan Guenther – many had him top 5 in NHL mocks prior to draft. Has 66 pts in 45 WHL games, including 34 goals. Sniper written all over and could go higher if a team is infatuated with him.
10. Predators – Simon Edvinsson – big two way dman will be brought slowly along by Wings because that’s what Yzerman does. But with Seider and Edvinsson their defense is sure shoring up. 15 pts in 36 SHL games as a teen. More than a pt per game in WJC. He is a great pick at 10.
11. Panthers – Bennan Otthman – all reports in training camp was this kid came to play. With 74 pts in 49 games in OHL, including 36 goals, this kid has hands and suspect goes earlier than did in NHL draft.
12. Devils – Chaz Lucius – great handle. Many had him as a top 10 NHL pick. Joining UMinn has 19 pts in 24 games in NCAA including 9 goals. I can’t see him outside the top 15.
13. Kraken – Zach Bolduc – two way tools has 58 pts in 41 gp including 28 goals. The Blues develop prospects well (see Thomas, Kyrou etc) so whoever gets him would be wise to let ferment.
14. Kraken (via Kings) – Xavier Bourgault – As Oilers pick, will go higher than most would predict. He has had a good year with 43 pts in 25 game played with 22 goals
15. Leafs – Jesper Wallstedt – guy has been a star in SHL with 2.08 GAA and .915 save Pct. I still cannot believe that he Oil traded down when he was on board. Minny nets look solid with Kahkonen and Wallstedt for future.
16. Flames (via Habs) - Aatu Raty – nearly made Isles after am amazing under 18 tournament. Near point a game in Liiga, he had slid to 2nd round and Isles pick there showing never should have fallen outside round 1.
17. Pens (via BJs) – Carson Lambos – near pt per game in WHL with 31 pts in 33 gp. Made team Canada for WJC. He will go higher in our draft.
18. Knights (via Flyers) – Sebastien Cossa – goalies always drop. He has been solid, but without a WJC, I suspect most will sit on tenders to back half of 2nd. His GAA and save percentage up on draft year.
19. Panthers (via Avs) – Isak Rosen – playing at multiple levels in Sweden. With kids own age, playing better but only 4 pts in 28 SHL games. Project player will drop some in BRHL as not as sexy as few others.
20. Oilers (via Canes) – Matt Coronato – pt per game in NCAA. Harvard is not an elite NHL factory and suspect will drop some in BRHL. Elite USHL scorer though and perhaps, will sneak into top 15 like in NHL.
21. Oilers – Matthew Knies – screaming up draft boards given Leafs spect and is playing very well at the NCAA level with 27 pts in 28 gp Played Olympics too with 2 pts in 4 games played. Big and skates well. I do give Dubas credit, he does seem to find quality in drafts even though has moved so many picks.
22. Knights – Fyodor Svechkov – Pt per game in the VHL and cup of coffee in KHL. The summer WJC, if pre our draft could see this guy jump up or fall back.
23. Flames (via Capitals) – Wyatt Johnson – jumped up draft from pre-NHL draft mocks but has had a great year. 48 gp with 88 pts and 30 goals already. This kid could go higher.
24. Sens (via Hawks) – Corson Ceulemans – as an NCAA freshman dman out of the AJHL, he has 22 pts including 7 goals. Not making a bad name for self and will stay in first round.
25. Knights (via Wild) – Nikita Chibrikov. Many were shocked he fell to 2nd round. Has more than a pt per game in VHL with 31 pts in 28 gp and had 2 pts in 2 gp at WJC. Think he makes first round.
26. Knights (via Isles) - Zachary L’Heureux – has done nothing to drop with 46 pts in 30 gp. Solid if not spectacular
27. Flames – Janis Moser – 28 gp in the NHL and 10 pts and 12 pts in 18 gp in the AHL. He will make our first round.
28. Blues –Oscar Olausson – less than a pt per game in OHL. He will fall some in the BRHL.
29. Knights (via Ducks) – Josh Doan – took game to new level for ASU; Shane’s kid as a freshman on new program at ASU had 11 g and 24 a in 33 gp in NCAA. I’ll give credit where do, thought taking him in 2ndas a stretch in NHL.
30. Kings (via Sharks) – Mackie Samoskevich – on a deep UofM team has 26 pts in 35 gp. Made US for short lived WJC. Will be a first round pick.
31. Sens (via Bruins) Fabian Lysell – Bruins picks tend not to fall much. Playing in WHL has 42 pts in 36 gp. Solid but not spectacular year.
32. Canucks (via Stars) – Daniil Chayka – big, skilled dman with 36 pts in 46 gp. I think he squeezes into first round.
Of note first round sliders:
Tyler Boucher – was a reach on draft day at 10th overall and did not have a good NCAA career. Now moved to OHL and has 5 pts in 9 games, not what you expect for a top 10 NHL pick. He could easily drop to 2nd round.
Chase Stillman – ok year but likely early 2nd round
Zach Dean – see Stillman
Mailloux – where will he go? Suspension for “issues” might lead to concerns over character but near point per game since return. Might be a habs fan who goes for it in the 2nd?
