Daily Recap

2 Home teams already in trouble

Oilers    6

Ducks   4

Something is amiss in Anaheim as they play well for the second straight game but lose at home for the second straight time! Following a game 1 defeat where Anaheim took a 1 goal lead to the third but couldn't hold it the Ducks players came forth with an even better effort in game 2 but were not rewarded for those efforts. The Ducks opened the game with a 20 shot barrage on the Oil goal, followed it up with 2 more periods of double digit shots and finished the game with a very solid 44 shots and 4 goals to show for their work but unfortunatly for them it was not enough! Mathews and McDavid were just too much to handle on this night accounting for a combined 3 goals and 5 points as Jake Oettinger had no answer and was not strong in the Duck net. GM Devon has already said that there will be changes for game 3 in Edmonton but if those changes don't result in a win then the series will be boaderline impossible to win. Oil in complete control up 2-0

Sharks    3

Flames   2

In a somewhat surprising move GM Kevin made the decision to start P.Mrazek in goal for game 2 leading to some speculation that a platoon may be the long term direction for these playoffs. As we have seen the last few years in the BRHL goalie health has been a glaring weak spot for teams looking to ride one tender deep into the playoffs and with a game lead in the series there was clearly an eye on keeping the starter fresh. The move nearly paid off as this very competetive game came down to a 1 goal difference and could in no way be pointed at Mrazek as he stopped 35 of the 38 shots he faced. San Jose needed the win, played like they needed the win, and got the win but as this series wears on how will Grubauer and the much maligned D hold up? This predictably tough series looks to follow that prediction now tied at 1

Wild    3

Stars   6

Dallas came into game 2 in a shocking position of trailing in the series at home despite a very dominating performance in Game 1. It appears Dallas wanted to focus on more quality vs. the quantity in this game however as although in control throughout the evening they didn't have nearly the opportunities or shots they had in Game 1 but instead had far better results putting 6 on the board. Game 1 hero S. Varlamov predictably got the start for the Wild but was no match for the elite Dallas shooters in this one and was dejected and noticeably fatigued leaving the ice following the game. Speculation around the rink is that Varly will be unavailable for Game 3 leaving a huge opportunity for Dallas to regain an advantage. Wild head home still with home ice but for how long? Series tied at 1

Blues    3

Hawks  1

The second western series where the home team is in trouble took place in Chicago and like the Ducks the Blackhawks couldn't turn the tide. Game 1 it was easy to see that something needed to change for Chicago to have any chance in the series as allowing Ovy to get 10 shots was not a recipe for success moving forward and they were able to do that. Unfortunately for Chicago,  St.Louis was still able to muster just enough offense to get past this struggling Blackhawk team. I am not sure Chicago can play a much better defensive game as despite giving up alot of shots (37) they were given up to the likes of Cogliano (5) and Ferraro (4). Ovy managed to score again but it was on only his 2nd shot of the game and was into an empty net so he was clearly not the factor in Game 2 as he was in Game 1. There is a beacon of light shining through for Chicago however as the health of Jarry may keep him out of Game 3 so an opportunity to steady the boat may be there! St.Louis firmly in control however up 2-0
