2022 BRHL Award Winners
You voted, now let's see who you picked.
A big thank you to everyone who voted for the awards and trophies. Here are your 2022 winners:
VEZINA TROPHY
Nominees:
Jake Ottinger (ANA) 2.15 GAA, .928 SV%, 45 wins, 7 SO
Connor Hellebuyck (EDM) 2.35 GAA, .923 SV%, 41 Wins, 8 SO
Semyon Varlamov (MIN) 2.17 GAA, .929 SV%, 37 Wins, 8 SO
Winner: Jake Ottinger (ANA)
Ottinger lead a strong Ducks squad this year and sported the most wins and the best goals against average. Ottinger had 16 votes, Varlamov collected 6 votes and Hellebuyck did not receive a single vote.
NORRIS TROPHY
Nominees:
Adam Fox (CAL) 82GP, 14G, 68A, 82P, +24
Victor Hedman (ANA) 82GP, 14G, 52A, 66P, +16
Ivan Provorov (LVG) 81GP, 14G, 53A, 67P, +13
Winner: Adam Fox (CAL)
This vote was close to unanimous, Hedman ended up with 1 vote to spoil it. Fox was so far ahead of the next defender in points and put up a PPG season, it's hard to overlook that kind of production regardless of your view on offensive vs defensive defenders.
CALDER TROPHY
Nominees:
Kirill Kaprizov (MIN) 82GP, 21G, 33A, 54P
Tim Stutzle (NJD) 82GP, 19G, 23A, 42P
Ty Smith (BUF) 82GP, 6G, 29A, 35P
Winner: Kirill Kaprizov (MIN)
Kaprizov ended up with 24 votes, runner up Stutzle had 2 and Smith had none. Kaprizov didn't put up any crazy numbers this year, but he was 12 points and 3 goals up on the next best player.
HART TROPHY
Nominees:
Logan Couture (STL) 82GP, 52G, 69A, 121P, +59
Aleksander Barkov (NYI) 78GP, 46G, 57A, 103P +36
Leon Draisaitl (SJS) 82GP, 50G, 54A, 104P, +35
Winner: Logan Couture (STL)
Couture had a crazy good season, producing 52 goals and 121 points, leading his Blues team and Eric to the BRHL cup. This vote was unanimous, he snapped up all 26 votes.
LES CUNNINGHAM AWARD (AHL MVP)
Nominees:
Rasmus Asplund (CAL) 82GP, 55G, 58A, 113P +42
Tyler Graovac (SJS) 82GP, 42G, 65A, 107P +19
Jamie Drysdale (BUF) 82GP, 23G, 77A, 100P +2
Winner: Jamie Drysdale (BUF)
This was our closest award vote, Drysdale got 17 votes and Asplund got 8. 100 points for anyone is impressive, but the fact a rookie defenceman put up those numbers was a surprise...oh, nevermind. I'm being told this isn't impressive at all. "Why are we surprised that a player who played 24 NHL games as an 19 year old dominated our AHL league" - Larry
GM OF THE YEAR
Nominees:
Rich - Carolina Hurricanes
Devon - Anaheim Ducks
Larry - Washington Capitals
Junya - Dallas Stars
Kevin - Calgary Flames
Winner: Rich Cordell (CAR)
Rich got more than double the votes of the next best GM. Everyone keeps expecting a decline from Rich and his Hurricanes, but that never seems to come.
TRADE OF THE YEAR (CONTENDER)
To Carolina: Evgenii Malkin / To Los Angeles: 2022 PHI 7th
TRADE OF THE YEAR (REBUILDER)
To Pittsburgh: 2022 CBJ 1st & 2023 CBJ 4th / To Columbus: Mike Smith
That wraps up this years awards, see you all at the draft!
